Penny Ante, by Dr. Duane Coyier, USA 199?
I was given a plant of 'Penny Ante' for evaluation in 1998. It is currently unregistered, so don't go looking for information about it....it's too new! It is a seedling of the red Mini, 'Poker Chip'.
It is still early to offer a full evaluation of this rose, so I will restrict my comments to a few remarks about its appearance. It is a sturdy, upright rose, growing to about 18" to 24" tall, and produces its blooms in clusters of 3 to 7. The color is a strong yellow, with brilliant red-orange picotee edges. The foliage is deep green and healthy, and it appears to be quite winter hardy so far. The blooms hold their half-open HT form for several days before opening fully. The open bloom holds a very nice form also.
I have begun using 'Penny Ante' in my breeding program, and it has been a very easy seed parent, accepting pollen from every rose I used on it. I'm beginning to see some favorable results using this cultivar as a seed parent. One of its offspring is my new seedling, 'Lindsay's Rose', which will hopefully appear on the market in the next year.
merit rating: none given.
